Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center (SZGMC), in collaboration with the Emirates Wildlife Society (EWS) ,organized the “Earth Hour” event at its premises, on Thursday evening,25th of March, 2017; coinciding with the global “Earth Hour” event, one of the key largest grass-roots environmental movement started by the World Wildlife Fund(WWF) at Sydney in 2007, in an attempt to protect the environment, and eliminate  factors that lead to climate change.

As SZGMC marked the “Earth Hour” event, on Saturday, between 8.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. by switching off its lights, and using a countdown clock projected with Laser Light onto the mosque’s main entrance wall .The Center in turn also invited all entities concerned, to participate in the event held at its   premises to raise awareness regarding the publics role in preserving the environment, and energy conservation. While it also provides entities such as Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA), Tadweer (The Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi), and Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), a member of the SEHA Health System, with an opportunity to reveal all programs and initiatives related to promoting sustainability.

H.E Yousef Al Obaidli, Director General of SZGMC on this occasion stated that: “SZGMCs participation in the “Earth Hour” campaign derives from the Centers firm commitment towards its social responsibility, as well as to support the national efforts that strive to achieve comprehensive development in the UAE. Particularly, that the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has become a global cultural destination, that receives large masses of visitor through the year from all around the world. Also, this participation contributes in raising the environmental awareness level amongst a large segment of the society, in accordance with the leadership’s keen concern towards the future of the coming generations.

“There is no doubt that the mosque has become one of the UAEs most prominent landmarks, and   hence it is particularly dedicated towards utilizing, and enabling all its vital operations in a manner that achieve sustainability, while also seeking local environmental sustainable products and services .The Center at this end is keen on highlighting its commitment towards environmental and social sustainability with all internal and external strategic partners.”  H.E Al Obaidli also added.

As H.E concluded his statement by stating that: “We here at SZGMC transform our environmental responsibility into a tangible and practical reality, as we  considered  reducing  this  great edifice’s  dependency on power  for lighting of its halls and corridors throughout  the day ,at the mosque’s  design phase, setting  an example in promoting the concept of sustainability.”

It is worth mentioning that the Center’s participation in this annual global event falls within its social interaction with the community; assuring the Center’s adherence to the standards of sustainability, and to  preserving and conserving its consumption. As this also raises the society’s awareness level, in regards to the preservation of natural resources for the future of our planet.
